Generations of firefighters have served on Watkins Street and have consistently drilled on the building across the street from the firehouse. The members have been waiting for the front door to ring to alert the members of a fire across the street for decades. The building, 110/112 Watkins Street is a 3 Story wood frame building, that has been defying gravity for almost a century and the weather has been pounding the many areas of the structure lacking siding and roofing. Its safe to say its one strong gust of wind away from toppling over. 110 Watkins street is frequented by many transient individuals who like occasionaly like to take naps on the front steps or throw a small party on the sidewalk. We frequently drill on the roll downs on the first floor, roof operations, hose stretching etc. 231 120 and the 44 were returning from a run when they turned onto Watkins Street from Glenmore ave when they saw smoke in the distance. 231 gave a 10-75 for the home box and commenced fire fighting operations. For years many “proby” notebook entries were made for hypothetical fires in this building and every person who served on Watkins Street rehearsed in their head each night in the bunk what their moves would be for each scenario. E231 put out fire on both the second and third floors while members of 120 aggressively searched the building. A great job was done by all.
