The Officers & Members of E231/L120/Bn44 congratulate FDNY Lieutenant Ernie Gentile (L157) on his retirement after 34 years of dedicated service to the City of New York.
“Ernie” was appointed to the FDNY on July 11, 1981 and following Probationary Firefighter School reported to Engine Company 231 where he would learn the art of engine work under his first Captain James Bauman. In 1986, he transferred across the floor to Captain Robert Babstock (L120) where he had the good fortune to work with (among others) the late, great War Years FF Tom Cleary along with longtime Lieutenants Tom Healy and of course Gr 18 himself (Mr. Pete McGreevey). In 1994, Ernie was promoted to Lieutenant (Bn16) and in 2000, landed a premiere spot with the Jolly Rogers (L157) where for the past 15 years, he has been among the most respected Fire Officers in the 15th Division.
Old-school approach…highly decorated….always “IN”…possessed an extreme sense of FDNY time honored tradition…a true character of The Job (but of course NEVER-EVER-EVER a target within the Firehouse kitchen!!)….Congratulations to a throwback, Lt Ernie Gentile, an Officer who was always at his best when L157 was going to work.
