FF Staten, our Senior Man and “Top Whip” was appointed to the FDNY in 1984 and subsequently assigned to Engine 1. After a brief stop in E220, he found his way to Brownsville, Brooklyn landing at E231 where he would have the good fortune to serve under 3 great Captains during his 22 year tenure on Watkins Street (Captain Joe Coniglio, Captain Bobby Higgins, and current E231 Company Commander Jim Duggan). Charlie leaves the Job as one of but a handful of men who had the distinction of operating during the initial stages of both historic WTC events (1993 WTC Bombing & September 11, 2001).
With an infectious smile the size of Texas, “Chucky” Staten was a friend to all he ever came in contact with. His decision to report for duty as ECC on his beloved Engine Company 231 (until the very last day permitted by NYC law) is a testament to his sense of duty, honor, professionalism, and most of all – our cherished brotherhood. A tip of the helmet to one of the good guys.
Thank you Charlie.
