A great time was had by all at the 2nd Annual Watkins Street vs Bradford Street Winter Classic held at the outdoor rink in Massapequa Park. Although the Brothers from Bradford Street jumped out to a commanding 8-2 lead, cheering Brothers from the sideline (complete with hot “toddy” in hand) called for a “next goal wins”. In true fireman fashion, of course Watkins Street members dug deep to score the winning goal – and with it bragging rights for an entire year!
After conferring at center ice, team captains agreed the only way to decide once and for all was to hold an old fashioned high stakes winner takes all shootout. Without the protection of a wingman (and while under extreme duress), Lt Pat Kerley (L175) – summoning all the strength he could muster from his tired creaky bones, would prove the old guy had just enough left in the tank to snap the game winner inches over the shoulder of Watkins Street net-minder FF Mike Richardson (L120). Following the “exhaustive” celebration, it was decided “drinks would be on the house” courtesy of the good Lieutenant from our favorite “East NY Truckin Company” of course!
Tip of the helmet to members of both firehouses for organizing a great evening.
